June Gardening Checklist

Planting

• Sow seeds for bush beans, basil, cucumbers, summer squash, amaranth, corn, and lettuce

Garden Maintenance

• Keep on top of weeding each week

Pest and Disease Control

• Use row covers and other preventative strategies for pests

Watering

• Keep up with watering needs, especially for containers and new plantings

Other Tasks

• Add supports/trellises for tomatoes and cucumbers

Provide food and water sources for pollinators and wildlife

• Plant warm-season vegetables like beans, chard, cucumbers, eggplants, lima beans, okra, peppers, squash, tomatoes, corn, melons, pumpkins, and sunflowers

• Plant pumpkin seeds for Halloween pumpkins by July 4th

• Put in successive plantings of vegetables every 2-4 weeks for a continual harvest

• Fertilize vegetable gardens, perennial gardens, fruit trees, and container plants

• Mulch garden beds to suppress weeds and retain moisture

• Prune spring-flowering shrubs after blooming

• Thin fruit on fruit trees to improve harvest

• Identify pests and plan companion planting to attract beneficial insects

• Prune out any diseased or damaged plant parts

• Set up irrigation systems like drip lines or soaker hoses

• Harvest early planted crops like bulbing onions

• Pinch off flowers on herbs to promote foliage growth
